World Cup 2018 Previews June 19th: Colombia v Japan, Poland v Senegal, Russia v Egypt

Today we see matches in Group H, the final group of the first matches, between Colombia v Japan and Poland v Senegal, then followed by match two for Russia against Egypt in Group A.

Colombia v Japan sees World Cup 2014’s top scorer return with James Rodriguez hoping to shine on the world stage yet again for Colombia, whilst Japan are entering into the tournament with a new manager that’s only been in charge of the team for two months prior to the tournament. Colombia enter into the today’s match drawing 0-0 in both their preparation matches, against Australia and Egypt, in what must be seen as two underwhelming performances. However, with players like Cuadrado, Rodriguez and Falcao, they’re a real goal threat, and could really turn on the style today and make their mark as potential contenders.

Japan come into this match on the back of a loss to Switzerland and a win against Paraguay in preparation, but have dangers players in attacking midfield such as Shinji Kagawa, Keisuke Honda and Takashi Inui. This should be an interesting match, with a free flowing game with pace and hopefully some goals.

Match Prediction:  Colombia 2-1  & Over 2.5 goals

The second match of the day sees Poland v Senegal which will be an exciting prospect, since Senegal come into this match after beating South Korea 2-0 and only losing 2-1 to Croatia in preparation, suggesting that they are a strong team, and with players like Sadio Mane, M’Baye Niang, Keita Balde in attack and Idrissa Gueye in midfield, which means that they could be the World Cup’s surprise package for many viewers unaware of the quality players that they have. They also have Kalidou Koulibaly in defence, who will be tasked with containing Poland’s star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Arkadiusz Milik is another striker that Senegal will have to try to contain, but as to who will win this match, remains to be seen, as it looks like it can go either way. However, we sense a victory for Senegal in this opening match in Group H.

Match Prediction: Senegal to win & Under 2.5 Goals

The second match in Group A kicks off tonight with Russia vs Egypt, with the hosts coming off the back of their 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia. That win can be seen as quite standard, as Saudi Arabia are an incredibly weak side. Egypt will finally be starting Mohamed Salah in this match, after losing 1-0 in the 89th minute against Uruguay, with Salah proclaiming he’s fully fit, despite his shoulder injury. This is a must win match for Egypt or they may as well start packing their bags and get ready to go home, as then only Uruguay awaits. So, there will be plenty of pressure on Salah’s shoulders. Russia will be animated and confident after their victory, but knowing full well that Egypt will be tougher opposition.

We expect this to be a closely fought match and we predict that both sides will claim a point each, setting up a tense final round of games, next week.

Match Prediction: Russia v Egypt 1-1 or Result Draw
