Jim Carrey Makes Reluctant Return To Hollywood With HBO’s “Kidding”

World renowned Canadian actor, Jim Carrey, has recently opened up about his decision to return to the entertainment industry after taking some time away from acting after some turbulent times.

The 56-year-old will be returning to the spotlight for his new HBO show, ‘Kidding’, which is due to be premiere on September 9th on Showtime.

Mr. Carrey spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his reluctant return to acting and why he wanted to leave Hollywood in the first place.

“I just didn’t want to be in the business anymore.” he explained. “I didn’t like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that.”

“And maybe it’s because I felt pulled toward a different type of creative outlet and really liked the control of painting — of not having a committee in the way telling me what the idea must be to appeal to a four-quadrant whatever.”

Although, Jim Carrey will be returning to our screens with ‘Kidding’, he says that he’s not returning to acting completely and his last film was the independent picture, ‘Dark Crimes’.

“I’m not back in the same way,” he said. “I don’t feel I’m little Jim trying to hang on to a place in the stratosphere anymore — I don’t feel like I’m trying to hold on to anything.”

Carrey’s biggest claim to fame was his role in 1994’s ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’, which despite mixed reviews, had a successful release with a sequel that followed. However, Jim claimed that he didn’t enjoy the fame that followed after the success of the film, and that once you achieve your dream in acting, the excitement can quickly take a different turn, proving once again that the world of Hollywood really isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

“There’s a weightlessness to it,” he shares. “You can dream about it all you want, but until you get it, you don’t realise that it’s really not a place that’s very comfortable for very long.”

Talking more about his lead role for ‘Kidding’, Carrey commented: “You’re always waiting for that thing that you recognise as some part of yourself. And the life experience here matched up.”

“I’ve gone through great loss, and somehow I ended up on the other side in a place where I can look anybody in the eye and feel like I’m on the same page” he continued, possibly referring to the death of his former girlfriend Cathriona White, who died from prescription drug overdose. “I understand how the river of grief can grab you at some point in your life and just throttle you.”

‘Kidding’ will be a comedy-drama, with Jim Carrey starring alongside Catherine Keener. It’ll focus on Carrey’s character, Jeff (AKA Mr Pickles), who is an icon for children’s television, as well as an anchor for a multi million-dollar branding empire. However, things suddenly take a bad turn when his family begins to fall apart, he struggles to cope and faces a slow leak of sanity as a result.

Apart from this, Carrey has not announced any other upcoming projects, so whether he’ll return to acting completely or finally throw the towel in is still yet unknown at this point. For now, we can only hope ‘Kidding’ is actually worth watching, right?
